Flat Removal in Ramsgate Harbour — No Lift, Restricted Parking
A first-floor flat in a Victorian conversion near Ramsgate Harbour. No lift, steep curved staircase, harbour-area parking restrictions, and antique furniture requiring specialist handling.
Move Overview
The Property: Ramsgate Harbour Area
The property was a one-bedroom flat in a converted Victorian terraced house within walking distance of Ramsgate Harbour. The harbour area of Ramsgate contains some of the town's most characterful properties — tall, narrow Victorian townhouses built on steep streets overlooking the marina. Many have been converted into flats, often retaining the original steep and narrow staircases that were designed for a different era of furniture.
This flat was on the first floor — above one other flat and below two more — with a curved staircase that narrowed significantly on the bend. The customer had already packed all boxes prior to moving day, choosing our Bronze service. However, among the contents were two items of antique furniture: a Victorian mahogany bureau and a Georgian dining table, both of which required careful wrapping and specific handling due to their age and value.
Challenges We Planned For
The harbour area of Ramsgate is heavily restricted for parking, particularly during summer months. We submitted a parking suspension application to Thanet District Council a week in advance, securing a 4-hour loading bay directly outside the property on moving day.
The staircase in the property curved significantly at the first-floor landing — a common feature in Victorian harbour terraces. We pre-assessed the staircase and brought specialist furniture straps and additional stair protection padding to manage the antique furniture safely around the bend.
The Victorian bureau and Georgian dining table required specialist handling — soft blanket wrapping, careful strapping, and two-person manual carries rather than using any furniture trolley or dolly which could have stressed the aged joints. Both items arrived at the destination undamaged.
As a shared building with other flats above and below, we were conscious of protecting common areas. We laid carpet protection throughout the staircase and hallway and communicated with the other residents beforehand about the move timing.
How the Move Was Handled
Our two-man crew arrived at 8:00am. With the parking suspension in place, we had the van positioned directly outside within minutes. We began with the antique furniture — both items were carefully blanket-wrapped and carried down the curved staircase using a two-person carry technique with furniture straps. This took approximately 45 minutes but ensured both items were completely protected.
Once the antiques were loaded, we worked methodically through the flat — bedroom furniture, living room, kitchen contents, and pre-packed boxes. The entire flat was loaded by 11:00am. We then drove the 4 miles from Ramsgate Harbour to Broadstairs and had everything unloaded and placed in the new flat by 12:30pm.
The antique bureau and dining table were positioned in the new flat as directed, unwrapped carefully, and checked for any transit damage — both were in perfect condition. Total move time from first lift to final item placed: 4 hours 30 minutes.
Outcome
The move was completed in 4.5 hours — well within the customer's expected timeframe. Both antique items arrived undamaged. The customer was moved in and settled before lunchtime.
